THE VALUATION HISTORY OF DANISH WIND POWER - The ongoing struggle of a challenger technology to prove its worth to society.
01.06.2018 kl. 13.00 - 01.06.2018 kl. 16.00
The thesis examines the historical valuation drama between incumbent- and challenger-coalitions by focusing on particular critical moments of valuation. Wind power started out in Denmark as a challenger energy source, which initially had to compete on the rules of incumbent fossil fuel energy sources. During the last 40 years, the challenger has however been able to transform the regulations and material conditions to make the Danish electricity grid and market arrangement more accommodating towards wind power.
This thesis mobilizes a ’valuation perspective’ to inquire into the historical role of valuation devices that has been used in the framing of wind power as worthwhile or not to society. This analysis include a mapping of the shifting coalitions of actors that are central to the struggle over wind powers valuation. Although the value of energy sources may appear to be given when seen through a certain device, the analysis have shown that the valuations of both wind power and other energy sources is highly continent and disputable. Although wind power has succeeded in challenging several entrenched meaning of what it is that makes an energy source valuable, it’s value is even today problematized through a focus on the market frameworks that enable it.
