Learning and adaptation as semiotic modelling

CANCELLED - In this seminar, postdoctoral researcher, Alin Olteanu, will argue that from a biosemiotic perspective the concepts of adaptation and learning can be seen as one phenomenon.

Learning in the cultural and educational sense is a specialized form of semiotic scaffolding. Education, practiced by humans or, arguably, by other animals, is a sub-case of adaptation, inheriting the semiosic structure of adaptation generally. In the same time, adaptation itself is a sub-case of learning in the most general sense: organisms, at multiple timescales, learn to adapt by reinterpreting real possibilities.
