Collaboration with Ghana Telecom University College · 26. July 2011

In 2008 Center for Communication, Media and Information Technology (CMI) and Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) initiated a large scale research and education collaboration.

It is based on a long-term involvement by CMI staff in ICT research and teaching in collaboration with different institutions in Ghana. A MoU was signed by the director of GTUC Dr. Osei Darkwa and the rector of Aalborg University Finn Kjærsdam in march 2008.

mICT - continuing education for engineers

The actual collaboration started by the offering of the Master in Information and Communication Technologies (mICT) in Ghana. The mICT program is an international multidisciplinary continuing engineering education program giving the students knowledge and skills in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). The main disciplines covered in the education are: Technology, Applications and economy of ICT.

The curriculum is carefully put together to be attractive both to the ICT engineer and to people working with ICT applications in other industries or institutions. Close working relations with industry and institutions will ensure that the course stays at the cutting-edge of the customer requirements to knowledge and competencies.

The mICT program is a part-time study attended in parallel with an ongoing work situation, but with reduced work load. The teaching is a combination of video-lectures, class-room teaching by teachers physically present and group work led by local tutors. It is a two year program, corresponding to 60 ECTS-points. Graduates who have attended this program will be able to work in the very front line of developing or deploying ICTs.

The first 18 students have graduated in the Spring of 2010. A new batch of another 18 students started in September 2010.

PhD programme

In 2010 the collaboration was extended to include a PhD program. 10 PhDs have been working for a year in a sandwich construction involving a base at GTUC and at least 3 months stay in Denmark and interactive video-seminars GTUC/ CMI. End of 2010 additional 10 PhD students are enrolled in the program. The subjects of the studies cover a wide area within applied ICT: E and M learning, E-government, ITS, Green ICT, Identity management, ICT-based information system in the health sector etc.

A number of new initiatives within research and education collaboration are currently discussed – incl. a specialization in ICT applications in the health sector.
